Ordering infinite utility streams

چکیده
We reconsider the problem of ordering infinite utility streams. As has been established in earlier contributions, if no representability condition is imposed, there exist strongly Paretian and finitely anonymous orderings of intertemporal utility streams. We examine the possibility of adding suitably formulated versions of classical equity conditions. First, we provide a characterization of all ordering extensions of the generalized Lorenz criterion as the only strongly Paretian and finitely anonymous rankings satisfying the strict transfer principle. Second, we offer a characterization of an infinite-horizon extension of leximin obtained by adding an equity-preference axiom to strong Pareto and finite anonymity. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Ordering infinite utility streams comes at the cost of a non-Ramsey set
The existence of a Paretian and finitely anonymous ordering in the set of infinite utility streams implies the existence of a non-Ramsey set (a nonconstructive object whose existence requires the axiom of choice). Therefore, each Paretian and finitely anonymous quasi-ordering either is incomplete or does not have an explicit description. Hence, the possibility results of Svensson (1980) and of ...
متن کاملOrdering infinite utility streams: Efficiency, continuity, and no impatience
We study two related versions of the no-impatience postulate in the context of transitive and reflexive relations on infinite utility streams which are not necessarily complete. Both are excluded by the traditional (weak) anonymity axiom. We show explicit social welfare relations satisfying Strong Pareto and the weaker version of noimpatience that are compatible with continuity in all the tradi...
متن کاملOn the Possibility of Continuous, Paretian and Egalitarian Evaluation of Infinite Utility Streams∗
There exists a utilitarian tradition à la Sidgwick of treating equal generations equally in the form of anonymity. Diamond showed that no social evaluation ordering over infinite utility streams satisfying the Pareto principle, Sidgwick’s equity principle, and the axiom of continuity exists. We introduce two versions of egalitarianism in the spirit of the Pigou-Dalton transfer principle and the...
متن کاملCan intergenerational equity be operationalized?
A long Utilitarian tradition has the ideal of equal regard for all individuals, both those now living and those yet to be born. The literature formalizes this ideal as asking for a preference relation on the space of infinite utility streams that is complete, transitive, invariant to finite permutations, and respects the Pareto ordering; an ethical preference relation, for short. This paper arg...
متن کاملPareto Principle and Intergenerational Equity : Immedi - ate
In an important contribution to the problem of aggregating infinite utility streams, Svensson (1980) shows the existence of a social welfare relation—a reflexive, transitive and complete binary relation over all possible infinite utility streams—that accommodates the axioms of Pareto and intergenerational equity. This possibility result is in sharp contrast with the seminal contribution by Diam...
